Since the beginning of the epidemic, almost 71 million people have been infected with the HIV virus and about 34 million people have died of HIV. Globally, 36.9 million [34.3–41.4 million] people were living with HIV at the end of 2014. An estimated 0.8% [0.7-0.9%] of adults aged 15–49 years worldwide are living with HIV, although the burden of the epidemic continues to vary considerably between countries and regions. Sub-Saharan Africa remains most severely affected, with nearly 1 in every 20 adults (4.8%) living with HIV and accounting for nearly 70% of the people living with HIV worldwide. -World Health Organization
The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in India is an alarming 2.4 million, according to a 2008 government-backed estimate. SAGAR Foundation’s AIDS Awareness Program involves a multi-pronged sequence of events and interventions including educational, social, and medical efforts to contain the spread of HIV/AIDS, especially in rural areas and within its pediatric group. The program focus is on giving proper care and treatment to infected people, and above all, ensuring a healthy atmosphere in the society to end social stigma and ensuing social marginalization.
