Computer literacy and awareness

Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to programming and advanced problem solving. Computer literacy can also be referred at comfort level someone has with using computer programs and other applications that are associated with computers. Knowledge as to how computers work and operate is another valuable component of computer literacy. Generally, literate connotes one who can read text in his or her native language, looking up new words if necessary. Likewise, an experienced computer person can manage with a range of basic tasks encountered upon using a personal computer. Since the usage of computers nowadays touches upon every facet of life, it is only natural that children with learning disabilities can bridge whatever gap that might deter them from making full usage of them.

The Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (DISHA) or National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) Scheme has been formulated to impart IT training to 52.5 lakh persons, including Anganwadi and ASHA workers and authorized ration dealers in all the States/UTs across the country so that the non-IT literate citizens are trained to become IT literate so as to enable them to actively and effectively participate in the democratic and developmental process and also enhance their livelihood.

The computer literacy program of the foundation aims at

    • Provide students and community members with increased access to computers and information technology.
    • Facilitate access to digital information while enabling effective analysis of the credibility and reliability of online sources.
    • Teach skills necessary to create new content for school, work, or personal use through the Internet, Microsoft Office, and other computer applications.
